Summit
FAQ
How do I play?
Each climb starts at one word and ends at another, the summit. Submit a word that links to the word you’re on, then another, until you reach the summit. How to play walks you through a climb.
What’s a link?
A word that moves you along the mountain. The game rates how strongly the word you submit links to the word you’re on. The tube at the right of the mountain shows it: the fuller it fills, the stronger the link. If it fills past the mark, it’s a link and you move to the word you submitted. If it stops below the mark, it doesn’t count: the card says Weak link or No link, and you stay where you were.
What’s the summit line?
The dashed line across the snow near the top of the mountain. Each word you link to is placed on the mountain by how closely it links to the summit word: one with little to do with it sits low, near the foot, and one closely tied to it sits high up. A link that climbs over the line summits the climb.
How is my score counted?
In links. Each word that counts is one link, the one that summits included. Words that don’t count, refused words and the summit itself aren’t added. Your day is the links over all five climbs. Fewer is better.
Why was my word refused?
The line under the word box says why. Most often, the word:
- isn’t one word of letters only,
- is already on the climb, or is the word you’re on,
- isn’t in the word list (check the spelling),
- has the summit in it, or comes from the same root, like “angry” for “anger”,
- is one the game doesn’t know well enough yet,
- is the summit itself: reach it with a word that links to it.
A few words are blocked to keep things friendly.
How does the game decide?
It draws on language data about how close words are in meaning and which words people think of together, plus my own word-link large language model dataset. The sources are on the About page.
Why only one Start over a day?
It keeps the game fair: you can’t plan a climb, start over, and do it in fewer words.
When do new climbs come?
At midnight New York time, the same five for everyone.
Do I need an account?
No. You can play every climb without one. An account adds friends, Lifetime stats and your climbs on every device.
How do friends work?
Sign in, then open Friends in the Menu and share your invite link. When someone opens it while signed in, you become friends with each other. Tap a friend to see your results side by side. Today’s show once you’ve finished your own climbs. You can remove a friend or reset your invite link at any time.
What are Lifetime stats?
Sign in, then open Lifetime stats in the Menu. You’ll see your streak (days finished in a row), your total links, your average links per climb and your best day (the finished day with the fewest links).
Can I play on more than one device?
Yes: sign in with Google on each one. Your climbs save to your account as you play, so you can pick up on another device where you left off. What you played on a device before signing in joins your account the first time you sign in there.
Is there an app?
Not in the app stores, but you can add Summit to your home screen, and it opens like an app. On an iPhone, tap Share in Safari, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open Chrome’s menu ⋮, then Add to Home screen.
Is it free?
Yes, with no ads and nothing to buy. If you enjoy it, you can buy me a coffee to help keep it ad-free.
What about my privacy?
Without an account, nothing Summit keeps has your name on it. Analytics are off unless you say yes, and you can change that in Privacy choices. The Privacy policy has the details.
How do I get in touch?
For something broken, use Report a bug in the Menu. For anything else, write to info@summitgame.io.
Who makes Summit?
Me, Peter :)
